Survivor Extinction: Ep 4, 5, and 6

"I go to rocks for my people." - David

With a 2 hr extravaganza & a belated blog there's much to cover! But I'm probably not going to because all I want to talk about is the utter dysfunction that is the Edge of Extinction. I'm fascinated by the bitterness and vile [cit. Battlestar Galactica] combined with the mental... fragility, shall we say? There's a reason that losing chefs castaways have not been invited back before. Previous seasons are the better for not including this twist. All the same, I'm excited to see it in action.

Next week we get to see what happens with these Losers, right? Do you think they'll weed out all the current Losers (I'm seriously just going to call them that from now you. And you can't say I'm wrong....) and then start with a fresh batch & then bring 1 person back one last time maybe when they're down to 4-5 players? How will know the Edge of Extinction exists change the way the merged players will compete?

The Teams:

Baggins "Using My Rage Over Last Season to Draft Like a Pro" - 58 pts

  • Joe (16 pts)
  • Eric (7 pts)
  • Lauren (4 pts)
  • Ron (14 pts)
  • Julie (15 pts)
  • Aubry (2 pts)

Eric "Eric" - 57 pts

  • Eric (7 pts)
  • David (4 pts)
  • Gavin (7 pts)
  • Wentworth (9 pts)
  • Julie (15 pts)
  • Aurora (15 pts)
Michal & Ben "The Hammer" - 53 pts

  • Joe (16 pts)
  • Lauren (4 pts)
  • Wentworth (9 pts)
  • Victoria (6 pts)
  • Julia (14 pts)
  • Wardog (4 pts)
Doug & Bri "Well, That Sucked" - 49 pts

  • Rick (2 pts)
  • Chris (2 pts)
  • Chris (2 pts)
  • Ron (14 pts)
  • Aurora (15 pts)
  • Julia (14 pts)

MoonBee "Nerdy White Dudes" - 25 pts

  • Rick (2 pts)
  • David (4 pts)
  • Gavin (7 pts)
  • Victoria (6 pts)
  • Wardog (4 pts)
  • Aubry (2 pts)

Power Rankings:

1. Eric - David might be literally shaky standing on Wardog's shoulders but I think he's a beast heading into the merge. His quote above gave me shivers. Perfection, man. Lesu members might look like they're in trouble but I have a feeling these veterans have a couple tricks up their sleeves. Gavin & Eric are great competitors too.

2. Baggins - Losing Aubry early with an idol in her pocket is a big blow to this otherwise beastly team. But could she make it back onto the show? If so will she be able to bring back her idol & extra vote too? A burnt Aubry full of secret advantages could be a dangerous & exciting twist to the game if she can get back into the thick of things.

3. Michal & Ben - Victoria impressed me a lot this episode. She might not have come off like a very nice person, but being able to play Aubry like her own personal fiddle was a huge coup and I think is a testament to her potential to run this game. We've got a lot of Lesu players & veterans, but they've been able to overcome some pretty tough odds up to now, so I think this team still has a good shot.

4. MoonBee - MoonBee is probably down 2 players & despite having  a team I really like, I think they won't be able to overcome their current point deficit. Too much overlap with Hammer/Eric teams to likely be able to cobble together a winning combo of castaways.

5. Doug & Bri - If Chris gets back in the game then this team could have a chance. But it looks like Keith will do everything he takes to prevent that from happening, so..... tough luck this season guys.

DoW:

Are Edge of Extinction players eligible? Because it's Reem all the way for me.

Reem is absolutely a douche, but I'd give DoW to War Dog (how did he get that name? [I know, "Look it up, Mom."])He's out of control.

Victoria was crafty, but a little too self-congratulatory. She'd better not get too smug or she be gone. Aubry got so outplayed it's embarrassing.

I don't understand how Joe doesn't look for an idol. He knows he has a huge target on his back and making personal connections/providing for the tribe is not going to help after the merge.

I, too, am excited to see what happens with the Extincted Ones...and if this process will continue and how it will affect votes at tribal.

Thanks for blogging. Made me giggle, as usual.

1. Reem is probably rough no matter what, but take away her vodka and cigarettes for a couple weeks and she's dangerous. It's a good thing she wasn't allowed to bring her shotgun to the island. DoW.

2. Wardog is a character. There is at least one Youtube video with him in a poker tourney at the Bike.

3. Claiming the top spot in the Survivor Power Rankings fulfilled a lifelong goal I've had for 2 months.

4. I've been showing my kids the challenges and now they love this show.

5. Keith is all about religion until things really matter.

6. My success is due in part the the dearth of blondes this season.

7. I'm not sure David left a good impression with his tribe. Despite his malnutrition (a pre-existing condition) he's in better spirits than his tribe mates.

8. Joe is a beast!

9. My guess is that at least some of the Edge of Extincted Ones go back to that island.

I really hope more than 1 loser/extinction member makes it back next week. Only having 1 player return for easy fodder doesn't seem fair. Bring 2 back, and now there is something to work with. Could really mix up things as multiple tribes merge and old, scorned players come back with a vengeance. I'm obviously hoping for Chris and Rick's return, preferably together...

War Dog gets my DoW. You can't have a self-given nickname (no matter how he "earned" it) of "War Dog" and then throw bean bags with such a lack of accuracy, or jump off a platform into the ocean with the gracefulness of a peace-time, house kitten. And for that, he earns my vote.

Is there such as thing as war-time house kittens and do they act differently?
He's definitely in the running for DoW every week.

I rewatched the challenges with my kids. Wardog couldn't throw! Going forward I think we should refer to him as Peace-time Kitten.

In a weird way his apparent reckless strategy makes him a threat in this game.

Wentworth looks very physically weak.

Some intriguing storylines are beginning to emerge:

1. Return from The Edge of Extinction. This may just be a repeat of "Exile Island" except it's secret. Appears there will be a challenge with the winner returning and the losers actually extinct or back to the Edge. Then there may be another extinction-return challenge in about six weeks.

2. The heart of the returning players. Strong edits for all, even voted-out-with-an-idol-&-advantage-Aubry. Might we see a post-merge alliance of returning players trying to shield each other? If it's too obvious they will get voted out.

3. Victoria's cold-blooded scheming. She's vicious.

4. The Eric/Gavin alliance. This duo could go all the way.

I've seen enough of the beleaguered tribe. Looking forward to the merge. Maybe then we'll find out who this Aurora person is.

I heartily recommend reading the link Doug shared about The Wardog. The author is almost as funny as Eric, whose comments on this blog make me laugh out loud almost every time.
War-time kittens/peace-time kittens....

And finally, I so agree with Moon about the beleaguered tribe. They are the only people I know at all. Move on.

Hoping there's more to the extinction stuff than the promo indicates; looking forward to watching tonight.

Our team name should be “nerdy white folks”. Just a minor adjustment for politically correctness:)
