Game Changers: Episode 4

Well, most people called this one correctly, with JT being the next to go. There was still the added suspense of him having found an immunity idol at the beginning of the episode... but I think JT may have locked up being one of the dumbest winners in Survivor history when he admitted he left the idol back at camp the night he was sent home.

The Teams:

Michal & Ben "Try Harder" - 60 points
  1. Tai (25 pts)
  2. [Caleb (-3 pts)]
  3. Sarah (15 pts)
  4. Troyzan (13 pts)
  5. Brad (10 pts)
Doug & Bri "Original Manbun" - 45 points
  1. [Malcolm (5 pts)]
  2. Zeke (15 pts)
  3. Aubry (7 pts)
  4. Jeff (7 pts)
  5. Sierra (11 pts)
Baggadocious "Legends of the Fall" - 38 points
  1. [JT (11 pts)]
  2. [Tony (-4]
  3. Ozzy (16 pts)
  4. Sandra (6 pts)
  5. Debbie (9 pts)

MoonBee "Steel Magnolias" - 33 points
  1. Michaela (7 pts)
  2. Cirie (13 pts)
  3. Andrea (15 pts)
  4. [Ciera ( -5 pts)]
  5. Hali (3 pts)
Power Rankings:

1. Try Harder: I don't think Brad could have handled the Debbie explosion any better than he did. He is definitely a tribe leader for them, but the question will be how will he do with the upcoming tribal mix-up? Fingers crossed he doesn't end up in a minority with Debbie on the new tribe! The tribal swap could also be rough for Tai who is a perennial target. Hopefully he finds his next immunity idol soon before he might have to leave that camp. Sarah & Troyzan will probably be okay no matter the results of the swap.

2. Original Manbun: Sierra is proving to be quite a challenge beast, and seems like a crafty strategist as well. Zeke & Varner seem to be doing just fine right now as well, though Varner is playing the role of beta male pretty convincingly & I'm not sure if he'll ever be prepared to make moves on his own. Aubry on the other hand is constantly on the wrong side of the votes. I don't know what's going on but it seems like a) no one trusts her, and/or b) she's just straight-up playing a bad game this go-round.

3. Steel Magnolias: Hali is on the board! She finally seems to be gaining some traction, both within her alliance & on the scoreboard. We'll see how she fares in a new tribe. Andrea was unsurprisingly devastated by the early departure of Malcolm, her love interest from the last time they were on Survivor together. Michaela is the big story though. She did nothing to impress and really just made herself seem like a giant brat in tribal council. But she does now find herself under the wing of The Queen, which is a pretty good spot to be.

4. Legends of the Fall: This team has trimmed its fat, now it needs to trim its gristle. Maybe it's just me, but I forgot how completely psychotic Debbie is! It was simultaneously uncomfortable, chilling, and scary watching her reject reality so completely. It's too bad that Sandra ended up on this team. She very well could win this whole game again, but it won't help Baggadocious win this season with how bad the rest of this team is doing.

Douche of the Week:
Debbie. Her strong flavor of batshit crazy had some not-so-subtle hints of douchery as well.

Def Debbie for DOW. Although psychotic might be more apt. Either she is completely out of touch with reality or they edited that first challenge in some weird, weird way.

I was really impressed by Sandra this episode. I don't remember past seasons so I don't know if her MO has been as evident in other seasons, but I found it a unique and intriguing way to get her way by eating all the sugar. Who would think of that? It seems like the way a "trickster" operates--not the most obvious or direct challenges, but behind the scenes, observing people's weaknesses or "hot spots" and finding a way to inflame them. She knew JT betrayed them at the last tribal but she didn't hammer that home with other people on her tribe like we might expect. Instead she found this devious way to make JT so angry that started acting out. And then she (and Varner) just quietly made it seem like they were going along with him at tribal council. Not sure I'm describing this the way I want to (it's late here in the east), but I thought she was masterful in this episode. She was definitely Queen for this day.

I agree with Margot on this, but let me add another tack regarding Michaela. She did certainly seem bitchy at council, but both Courtney and I had the sense that it was all part of the drama to play JT. Clearly S. and V. were acting their parts perfectly, but it seemed like M. was reading from the same script, and it all really played out with JT being totally clueless. The exchange between S. and M. about things that M. did around camp, maybe that was spontaneous, but it seemed intended to provoke JT with M.s bitchiness. The only question is why A. wasn't included in the drama. You're questions about her, Michal, are right on point.

And D., seems like she is a goner no matter where she lands. She seemed so out of touch with reality altogether. Did she stop taking her meds or something?

Even though I feel Sandra has been over confident this season it was great to see the only two time winner of Survivor showing off some fantastic moves. It feels like Sandra has been at every tribal council and she keeps surviving.

Michaela did act quite pleased with herself, drinking tea (?), and flipping her hair but considering JT had just called her a space filler on a season of game changers I didn't begrudge her a bit of smugness. Overall, she has let her emotions play too much into her strategic game and I don't give her much chance to win but man, that was another extremely enjoyable episode.

I could have done without the Debbie theatrics. Well done by her tribe not to take the bait.

I think Michal may have mentioned that without Fischbach(sp?), JT would never have sniffed the final tribal council on the season he won. The latest two outings show JT to be lacking in his strategic judgement. Giving an idol to Evil Russ (who wasn't even on his tribe) and not even taking your idol to tribal council the very next time you go after betraying your tribe. A tribe consisting of an aforementioned two time winner and some other savvy vets. JT really must like sugar because he was eating up all that sugar coated bs at tribal council. A truly terrible performance from JT.

I was intrigued by the short clip we saw of Sarah approaching Troyzan. Try Harder teammates working together would be great.

Awbray continues to be in the dark when it comes to planning and decisions. She should benefit from whatever this 'drop your buffs' teaser ends up being.

Gotta give Sierra and Brad the most improved player awards at this point.

Debbie was certainly douchey this episode but also just plain nuts. I give DoW to the former Survivor winner who didn't bring his idol to TC.

Excellent comments so far. Sandra is twisting the needle in. I don't even like Ciera. I take full responsibility for doubting Sandra and regret doing so. However, I think if you continue to look at the players getting voted out, it does not bode well for Sandra. It's consistently been aggressive players and/or former winners. I love the moves she's been making but I don't think this is a season that you want to come out guns blazing - which is why I continue to like Aubry's chances. She was blindsided by this move but never considered as a voting candidate. I think she will quietly get something going in her next tribe that lasts till the final few players.

One of those gunblazers was JT. Based on his performance this season, it is easy to forget how dominant JT was on the season he won. He knew how to win over and manipulate a regular season of castaways, but he has regressed from those days and was overmatched by a tougher field of opponents. He would be a good DoW choice, but Debbie was overwhelming. She couldn't take responsibility for blowing the challenge after talking her balance skills up and projected it on Brad, who didn't appear to have done anything chauvinistic and seemed to handle her reaction well. I can't imagine that tribe would have kept her around as nobody trusts her.

I also will go with Debbie for DoW. Her blow up after the reward challenge was enough to convince me, but then her decision process at the immunity challenge put it over the top. Her tribe basically asked her "What part of this do you want to do so that you don't freak out again?". She then said "I'm still the best at balance, but because of that I choose not to do the balance part." Would she be gone if her tribe had gone to tribal council?

Another tribe mix up will definitely be very interesting. Especially if they are combining down into one tribe, which I hope they are.

A merge at 15 players? Has that ever happened before?
